Sailing Instructor Expectations
It is the expectation of the Ocean Gate Yacht Club and the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association that you will adhere to the following:
Be aware of your enormous influence on the sailors in your charge and strive to model the highest ethical and moral conduct.
Promote the total sport of sailing, not just racing.
Place winning in the context of fun, good sportsmanship, and fair play.
Take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use.
Be aware of your responsibility for the supervision and welfare of the sailors in your charge at all times, especially at regattas. Provide support to fellow instructors as may be required from time to time to ensure the safety and well being of all sailors on the Toms River and Barnegat Bay.
Operate support craft under recognized principles of safe motorboating.
Understand that you must uphold event regulations, on and off the water, and housing rules.
Be thoroughly acquainted with the racing rules, encourage adherence to the rules and teach not only the rules, but also the procedures to be followed in the protest process.
Assist all sailors to develop to their fullest potential.
Encourage all sailors to be organized, to be responsible for their own equipment, to respect the property of others and to follow the lost and found procedures.
